FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Juniper Networks has hired Michael Lynn, a security researcher who created controversy when he announced in July a security flaw in Cisco Systems' Internet work Operating System. Cisco subsequently filed a lawsuit against Lynn, who agreed not to publicly discuss the information. Information Week (11/7) | | Taiwanese company Accton Technology announced the world's first mobile phone equipped with software for making calls via Skype Technologies' VoIP network. The Taipei Times (11/8) | | A number of VoIP providers including Skype Technologies, Google and EarthLink have formed a group called the Internet Voice Campaign to promote VoIP adoption. CNET (11/2) | | Spirent Communications, Vonage and the Rural Telephone Service Co. said at last week's TELECOM '05 that service providers will face dire consequences if they don't put IP service deployments through rigorous testing procedures at all stages of the process, from before the system launches until after it's rolled out. Telecommunications (11/2005) | | Vonage's best option may be to put itself up for sale, although it's questionable how much interest an auction would draw, The Wall Street Journal reports. While eBay's $2.6 billion acquisition of Skype Technologies certainly boosted Vonage's prospects, potential suitors like cable and Internet companies may instead choose to build their own VoIP services. One fit that might make good business sense is a deal with T-Mobile or another wireless carrier without a conventional phone business. The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) (11/3) | | A spammer could send viruses and other unwanted e-mails to a secured Wi-Fi network due to a security flaw in Cisco Systems' wireless LAN controllers. The bug impacts large networks using Cisco 1200, 1131 and 1240 series Wi-Fi access points controlled by Cisco 2000 and 4000 series Airespace Wireless LAN Controllers, according to a company security advisory. CNET (11/2) | | The FCC yesterday said VoIP providers do not have to cut off subscribers who cannot receive 911 for VoIP. However, the FCC said VoIP providers must halt marketing efforts in areas where they're not linking VoIP calls to emergency dispatchers. Reuters (11/8) | | Microsoft will purchase media-streams.com, a Switzerland-based software company, in a bid to expand into the online telephone business. Microsoft will use media-stream.com's VoIP technology to expand services for business users of the Microsoft Office Real-Time Collaboration Group. CNET (11/2), Seattle Post-Intelligencer (11/3) | | In an e-mailed memo to senior executives and engineers, Microsoft founder and chairman Bill Gates said the company's recent unveiling of Windows Live and Office Live are just the first step in a major shift of the company's focus to advertising supported Internet services. Gates' e-mail references a memo he in turn received from the company's chief technology officer, Ray Ozzie, which specifically names Adobe, Google, Skype Technologies, Yahoo!, Apple and others as competitive threats.
